GN 434 – Genes and Development

For an independent summer project in developmental genetics, I researched scientific literature to examine the molecular and developmental origins of spina bifida, focusing on neural tube closure, folate metabolism, and gene regulation pathways. This work required integrating embryology, gene expression mechanisms, and environmental risk factors to understand how disruptions during early development lead to neural tube defects. The final product was a structured educational website synthesizing this research into a coherent, pathway-level explanation of disease development and prevention.

This independently developed website translates complex developmental genetics into accessible language for a general audience. It represents growth in science communication, digital organization, and independent project management. Creating a public-facing educational resource reinforced my understanding that scientific knowledge must be both accurate and understandable.
